The National Parks

Bruce Peninsula National Park, the largest intact eco-system in Southern Ontario, was established in 1987. It contains unique geological formations native only to the Bruce Peninsula. These include many indicator species, a variety of wildflowers, over 40 varieties of orchids and 39 species of ferns. It is no coincidence rare and sensitive ferns that require the purest air to survive thrive here. Ancient cedar trees, some more than 1000 years old, cling to the escarpment edge. The park boasts a large cross section of migrant and breeding birds, due to the unusually rich diversity of habitats. Fathom Five National Marine Park is 112 square kilometres of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay waters, consisting of 19 islands and an ecosystem stretching 200 metres deep. The cold, clear waters nurture the silent legends of sunken wooden schooners and steamers while ill-fated barques and barges tell their tales from a watery stage. The pristine waters offer great viewing of these shipwrecks and underwater geological formations. It is known as a diver’s paradise. As you drive into E’Terra, on your right hand side and nearest neighbour to the east is Bruce Peninsula National Park. With the Park next door, ecologically the lands will be preserved forever. Walking down the grand staircase to the water’s edge, your magnificent vista is that of the Archipelago of the Fathom Five National Marine Park.

At the horizon on clear days especially during the winter months, you see beyond the park boundaries, the islands of Lonely, Fitzwilliam, Yeo and even the edge of the world’s largest fresh water island of Manitoulin. The visibility from E’Terra library is spectacular especially when Mother Nature has a tantrum and storms blow across the open waters of the Fathom Five National Marine Park crashing into the shores of the islands in her path.
