The following are simply comments from my perspective and not necessarily beliefs of my staff, colleagues and support staff. Laurie Adams
For 16 billions years the climate on Earth has been changing and hence since the beginning of time there has been climate change, a warming and a cooling, as there is duality in every process. This process is as natural as the air we are required to breathe in order to live. The earth changes are an ongoing evolutionary process and dependent or affected upon by a variety of stresses in its system. The wonderful aspect of climate change today is that humans have the capacity to question their understanding of this natural phenomenon
In the building of E’Terra, understanding sustainability and keeping within the philosophy of ecology, economics and ethics made common sense to design properties around evolving changes in our weather. Whether it is to keep heat or cold in or out, the science of building was applied to address issues to also maintain a healthy space. When I hear and read news reports on climate change, global warming, greenhouse gases, I apply the 3E’s to see if there is a balancing point or if the balance is off. My educated guess in seeing where the ‘off’ might be is usually around Economics!
Global warming is more than C02 production. Our very existence here creates C02 and methane! Hmmm… we need to change our way of thinking towards a healthy planet and sustaining a healthy lifestyle. Avoid fear based information sessions in an area that we only have a few thousands of years of experience we will then be more productive. We must understand that Nature is the most powerful force on earth and although we have tried, the human race has not found a way to even match this awesome power. We continue to find ways to work within this power and should continue to understand it in order to enhance our life. (Biomimicry)
Consumption is and will be our demise. While the issues in supporting existence on this planet are far more complicated, it is at the same time simplistic. We must learn to appreciate that the heart beat and soul is not only of a planet, but that this statement is a mirror of each individual living on it or vice versa. While consumption is based on economics, the heart represents the environment and our ethics is the soul. Going forward, balance is the only why to ensure our future. (Economics, Ecology & Ethics = balance)
The words often heard are “Plant more trees” and yet we forget the natural processes of trees such as Scotch pine, spruce and birch in particular and the release of large quantities of nitrous oxide. The actions taken by countries who do promote planting more trees need to also understand that the tearing up soil and peat bogs, and burning fires releases large amount of C02. More importantly understanding the serious impacts of ‘The URBAN SPRAWL’ with all of its side effects!! Another topic for social time discussion is the amount of conversations regarding the extinctions of species in relationship to global warning. Protection of endangered species is most definitely a moral obligation as long as we understand that extinction is also a natural process, not a political one. We must always take into consideration the results of our actions around issues such as deforestation, pollution, fishing etc. (Economics, Ecology & Ethics -/+ balance) In which order should the three E’s come in, as I notice that we always seem to consider the economic impact first.
Balance the cycle - planet, food, energy, people, health, people, energy, food, and planet. We need to now take a look at how our ego/eco centricities affect this balance as part of being a human doer; physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Are we aware of the importance of utilizing all of our senses?! Experts in each of the four quadrants certainly have their comments on what is going on while we all cohabitate at this particular time in the earth’s cycle. I believe all is linked together and only together can we achieve the future we desire for in the next generations. The old cliché of ‘Actions speak louder than Words’ is more relevant at this time than at any other time in human history. Can I change the climate, most certainly not! I am leaving that project management job up to the professional in the field; Mother Nature and the Universal ways. Can I make a difference on my footprint in the environment I live in and the surrounding ecology while creating a healthy space as well as making an ethical living in order to bring joy this I can do!
